SI~2 Trout Stunner The SI~2 trout stunner can be used for trout from around 0.2- 1.4kg. The system utilizes a double-barrelled module and is designed using the same well-developed percussive stunning principles as the SI~5 salmon stunners. What the scientists say: Dr Steve Summerfelt The Conservation Fund's Freshwater Institute (CFFI) ”The new SI~2 Fish stunner works very well with Rainbow Trout. We have achieved stun rates in excess of 90% from the start and achieved automated delivery with trout of approximately 400 to 500 g. We have only been using the SI~2 system a relativly short time however we are achieving very high stun rates and significant improvements in efficiency. We are now working with Seafood Innovations to enhance the auto-delivery system for fish up to 1.4 kilograms. CFFI is delighted with the results to date and will publish our results in the near future. The system is not only efficient, but also ensures instantaneous death and addresses issues of worker safety and animal welfare at harvest.” “Humane slaughter of farmed fish is possible for industry. The SI-2 dual channel flow-through fish stunner for plate fish is the latest development from Seafood Innovations and meets the need to harvest smaller fish efficiently and humanely with out sacrificing quality. Requiring only air to operate the stunner, the system requires a limited amount of space and can be set up or relocated in only minutes. When set up with the Seafood Innovation automated delivery system (patents pending) harvesting can be undertaken with minimal supervision, giving the quality benefits that can only be achieved through the instantaneous percussive stun method.

The percussive stunning method is recognized by all world authorities as the optimal method for humane slaughter, i.e. World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) The Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), MAFF ( Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food), The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), The European Commission's Standing Committee Of The European Convention For The Protection Of Animals Kept For Farming Purposes , HSA ( Humane Slaughter Association), etc There is abundant evidence in literature and in industry linking percussive stunning with improved flesh quality and this has been a driving force behind industry adoption. When compared with some techniques such as CO 2 sedation, the difference is extremely obvious ( click here to see a comparison of different harvest methods ). Unlike asphyxiation or CO 2 sedation, the fish are rendered insensible instantaneously and irrecoverably. |
