SI~5 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the size and weight of the SI-5?
A: The SI~5 weighs approximately 21 Kilograms and measures approximately 510 x 200 x 550mm high.

Q: What runs the SI-5?
A: The SI~5 is mechanically triggered and runs on compressed air which may be supplied by a small compressor or a regulated supply from a cylinder. The machine operating pressure range can be regulated and the normal operating range is 6 to 8 bar or 90 to 120psi. The maximum recommended air supply pressure is up to 10bar.

Q: What is the running cost?
A: The operating cost of the SI~5 is almost negligible and the volume of compressed air required for each hit is very low. A single 2Kw compressor will supply four SI~5 stunners.

Q: What is the flow rate of fish through the SI~5?
A: When fish are delivered by pump the average operator can achieve a continuous production of 25-35 fish per minute. When fish are lightly sedated and where operators are highly experienced it is possible to achieve rates in excess of 35 fish per minute (approx 2000 fish/hr).

Q: How do we service the SI~5?
A: Most servicing can be performed simply using tools and parts available from Seafood Innovations.

Q: What is the best way to set up the SI~5?
A: The SI5 should be set up in combination with a pump system that can deliver a constant and smooth supply of fish in a gentle manner. The time between contact with the air and the stunning operation should be as short as possible. The operator should only need to guide fish to the stunner as the stunner will fire automatically when the fish enters the stunner and contacts the trigger system.

Q: What is the size range for the SI~5?
A: The SI~5 is adjustable for height, width, and trigger position. The SI~5 will stun fish over a size range of 5 kilograms without the need for adjustment. The SI~5 can be adjusted to take salmon to 20 kilograms making it available for stunning broodstock.

Q: How do I operate and maintain the SI~5?
A: When you buy the SI~5 you will receive an operation manual. You can also contact Seafood Innovations Pty Ltd for further assistance.

Q: Is the SI~5 covered under warranty?
A: Yes. The SI~5 is covered by commercial warranty of 6 months for defects in manufacture and extended warranty for a further 6 months is available on application.

Q: Where do I get spare parts or service for the SI~5?
A: Seafood Innovations Pty Ltd is preparing a CD ROM covering the servicing and overhaul of the SI~5 stunner as well as a full range of spare parts. We can also provide support through e-mail or by phone and can repair or re-condition machines in a few days (subject to customs clearance delays). Servicing and maintenance training courses are run from time to time.

Q: How does the SI~5 make harvesting more humane?
A: When fish are stunned with the SI~5 , the loss of conscious is immediate and irreversible. Pre-slaughter stress is minimised when fish are pumped into the patented in-water table stunning system and then into the SI~5 . With this system fish are largely not exposed to un-natural or stressful environment conditions prior to slaughter.

Q: What is the protector sleeve?
A: The protector sleeve is a disposable shield made for benchtop stunners and fits between the striker of the SI~5 and the head of the fish. This serves to prevent damage to the head, improve stunning efficiency, keeps the machine cleaner and provides a means to emboss an identify mark on the head of the fish.

Q: Can I have my own logo stamped on the fish?
A: For an initial set-up cost it is possible to provide a simple individual logo on the protector sleeve.

Q: Will the SI~5 stun fish other than salmon?
A: Yes, There are a range of adjustments that allow the SI~5 to be set to compensate for different shaped fish heads.

Q: What is the life of the SI~5?
A: The lifespan of the SI~5 is enhanced through routine maintenance and servicing. Main "O" rings are available in a kit and should be replaced at 3 to 6 months intervals. After 12 months use an overhaul and inspection is recommended. As the major components and structure of the SI~5 are stainless steel and coated alloys and other non-corrosive materials, the overall unit can be expected to last for many years if routinely cleaned and maintained.

Q: How does the SI~5 affect bleeding?
A: Compared to Carbon Dioxide based systems bleeding is substantially better. Heart action is retained long after the fish is rendered unconscious with the SI~5.

Q: Does the stunning operation influence flesh appearance?
A: Yes. Less stress and activity at harvest reduces the production of lactic acid in the flesh. This enhances the translucency of the fillet and appears as a more intense colour. The tendency of the muscle blocks to gape or separate is also reduced leading to an enhanced overall appearance and better slicing properties.

Q: What if we have a problem during harvest?
A: The SI~5 is quite reliable especially when cleaned and serviced as recommended. It is also relatively simple and easy to repair, however we advise that it is a good idea to have a spare machine or components available for emergencies. The SI~5 is designed so that if there is a malfunction for any reason, a spare machine or control box or powerhead can be installed in less than 1 minute onsite and there is no delay in the harvesting operation. This also allows a rotating maintenance schedule to be applied to the machines without the need for downtime.
